The Akbank Jazz Festival which hosts the most important figures of Jazz music, and provides the opportunity for many people to get acquainted with jazz, takes place every year during October.
The Akbank Jazz Festival has become an important event for fans of not only jazz, but also other music genres. The 2009 festival began on its 16th anniversary with a concert in Aya İrini, performed by Kurt Elling, who is considered one of the most important figures of jazz with his four octave baritone vocal, in addition to his identity as a composer, arranger, and song writer. It continued with the performances of Archie Shepp - Attica Blues, Pharoah Sanders - Tauhid, Marion Brown - Three for Shepp and Grammy award winner famous jazz pianist Dave Burrell. The festival takes place is special locations across Istanbul, both in halls and in alternative venues which include the historical Aya İrini and Asitane, and some of the most popular venues in Istanbul such as Babylon, Roxy, and Ghetto.
