The International Istanbul Theatre Festival which began in 1989 continues its activities once every two years since 2001. The festival meets with theatergoers each year on May.
Spectators get the opportunity to watch not only the performances of internationally acclaimed theatre and dance groups, but also the best examples of Turkish theatre. The groups and artists who are carefully chosen for the festival have occasionally made a name for themselves in other theatre stages around the world with their radical works. Be it modern or postmodern, unique and ground breaking examples of contemporary theatre have been staged in the International Istanbul Theatre Festival.
Having staged numerous important theatre figures such as Peter Brook, Pina Baush, Robert Wilson and Terzopoulos, the International Istanbul Theatre Festival supports the creation of works on specific themes with the collaboration of directors of worldwide fame, and local artists and groups. This collaboration allows the creation of new opportunities for theatre.
