Ceramic Art

Contemporary ceramic art in Turkey developed with the establishment and spread of the ceramic industry and a parallel increase in the organization of ceramic training. As in the case of the other branches of art, talented young artists were sent abroad in the first few decades of the Republic. Ismail Hakki Oygar, Hakki Izer and Vedat Ar, who were educated in Paris, produced original designs and con-tributed to the development of awareness, on the part of the public at large, that ceramics is a bona-fide branch of art, quite apart from its functional use as a mere decorative element. A ceramic studio was established and ceramic education began to be organized with the contributions of these artists at the State Academy of Fine Arts in 1929. Ceramic education spread thanks to developments in industry and this branch of art became more dynamic with the works at an international level. Many artists such as Fureyya Koral, Sadi Diren, Bingul Basari, Candeger Furtun, Atilla Galatali and Beril Anilanmert produced world-class ceramics as of 1949.

Meanwhile, Fureyya Koral established the first private ceramic studio in the mid-1950s. The Western perception in contemporary ceramic art, which had been initiated by Ismail Hakki Oygar and Vedat Ar, and also contributions of other artists, increased the interest of people in this art. Meanwhile Turkish ceramic artists won numerous awards abroad. The rapid development created a dynamic environment so that many artists began to deal with ceramic art. The quality and the quantity of the exhibitions in Turkey are in parallel with these developments
