Turkish Decorative Arts

Decorative arts have formed an important part of traditional Turkish culture and art throughout the centuries. Turkish Decorative arts, which have their roots in Central Asia, were brought to Anatolia by Turkish tribes that emigrated from the Asian steppes. The Seljuks and the Ottomans, who inherited this heritage, developed these arts with delicacy. A tradition of art that has thus accumulated through centuries became the legacy of the Republic.

A Department of Turkish Decorative Arts was established at the State Academy of Fine Arts in 1936, where training was offered in Tezhip and Husn-i Hat (Gilding and Calligraphy), Ebru (Marbling), Miniatures and Tile Design. Three universities in Istanbul and Izmir (Mimar Sinan, Marmara and 9 Eylul Universities) have Departments of Decorative Arts. The General Directorate of Fine Arts of the Ministry of Culture organizes activities to enliven and develop traditional Turkish decorative arts. Various exhibitions are organized both in Turkey and abroad and conferences are given to promote every branch of the Turkish decorative arts.

TheTurkish Decorative Arts Exhibitions have been organized annualy since 1986 to encourage the artists of this branch to seek a contemporary synthesis of what is universal and what is traditional and uniquely Turkish, and also to provide a regular platform where these artists may exhibit their latest creations.
